Saint Augustin - Myeong-Dong

Last week me and my girlfriend went to Saint Augustin (생어거스틴) to have some good dinner. I usually eat Korean food and I can handle spicy and hot dishes. But sometimes I want to eat other food. This time we finally tried Saint Augustin, which is an Asian food chain, mostly Thai, but you can also find Vietnamese and Indonesian food.

The menu is pretty extensive and varied, so for me it is hard to decide what to eat because all of them look delicious. So we asked for a recommendation. The staff is kind and looked professional, they found a nice table, on an outside terrace. Perfect for this weather to feel some evening breeze. Even we came to the center of Myeong-dong, the spot was calm and peaceful and we could feel escaping all the noise from the crowded streets of Myeong-Dong. I'd like to say the background music wasn't my style, and a place like this could improve a lot if they had some lounge-chill out style music. Well, RnB wasn't that bad.

The staff answered all our questions about the food, and they even gave us some more explanations of how they taste, and what should we eat depending on our likes.

So, we decided to start with a salad. Grilled Beef salad. And we didn't want to miss the most recommended dish: The Poo Phad Phong Kari. And to give it a summer touch, we wanted to try the Coconut Shrimps. We were hungry, so we also ordered an extra bowl of rice. After ordering, the drinks came right away: Mangoade, absolutely yummy.

We didn't had to wait much. Service is fast and good. The order came almost all together, so we put them in the middle of the table, and could serve small portions to our individual plates. We started with the grilled beef salad. The amount was good for two people, and god, beef was good. Finally I had some good beef after a long time! Dressing felt good and we enjoyed, but we didn't finish it because we couldn't wait to try the Poo Phad Phong Kari: A really soft crab (so soft you can eat the shell) stir fried with some delicious curry sauce. Then I understood why is one of the most popular dishes of the restaurant. But still on the table, there were that Coconut Shrimps, looking at us and waiting for me to catch them with our tongs. Sometimes I feel lazy to peel the seafood, but this time I didn't had to, all the shrimps come well peeled and dipped in that crazy excellent coconut sauce with some vegetables.

Having the three dishes on the table, kept us having a little bit of each one, combining them with the bowl of rice. Before finishing all of them, we were almost full. Our bellies were satisfied and our tongues were pleased. Our choices were good, but I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

10 coses que sorprenen dels restaurans coreans - 10 surprising things about Korean restaurants

In Korea, eating outside can be the same price or even cheaper than buying and cooking food at home. That's why lots of korean people are used to eat often out of home. We can find a lot of kinds of restaurants. Since very homie restaurants offering only 3 or 4 different dishes, or other more specialized restaurants, offering world cuisine.

I quines cuines!

One of the most surprising things from some restaurants, is that they look like a home kitchen or living room. We can see the kitchen itself, and what kitchens! We can see how the owners prepare the food in front of us. Many of that kitchens...i'm afraid they wouldn't pass a sanity control...

2 - Aigua sense cost.

Free water. Water is always included in restaurants. We can pur as much as we want. Some restaurants give some plastic bottles the we can refill whenever we want, and in some other places we can just stand up and refill our own glass to the (hot and cold) water machine. The glasses are usually inside a kind of showcase, and theyre under ultraviolet light, that it's supposed to keep the glasses sterile.

Anunci de Soju
A tot arreu podem veure rètols d'anuncis de soju protagonitzats per belles models
We can see soju advertisment with beatiful models everywhere

More food for free. In many restaurants we can ask for more food or side dishes, and rice. Sometimes, the owners or waiters will give them us so happily how well we eat. I aslo have meet some place where the waiters offered to repeat the dish before I finished it.

Samgyeobsal, boníssim!
Graella de Samgyeobsal i plats d'acompanyament

4 - Cuinem nosaltres mateixos. A la majoria de restaurants on s'hi serveix carn (ja sigui de porc, pollastre o vedella), les taules tenen un fogó amb una planxa, o una graella on nosaltres mateixos ens encarreguem de coure i tallar la carn al nostre gust.

We cook ourselves. In most of meat restaurants (pork, chicken or beef), the tables have a fire in the midle whith some grill where we can cook and cut the meat as we like.

It's better to shift when it's time to cook, or you won't get any food!

It was nice to meat you!
This is where you cook some the meat as you like

As we cook for ourselves, the restaurants are usually divided with separate rooms. There's no need to have waiters walking around because in each table there is an electronic button which calls the kitchen when we need anything.

Korean cooking comes always with some side dishes such as kimchi and other food. Many food is shared on the table. It's quite normal that everybody puts theyr chpsticks or spoon to the same soup dish. And when we order meat, it's mixed with side dishes. Everything is for everyone. But we also can find dishes for only one person, that ones aren't shared. I should say that at the beginning I dind't find it very healthy, but then i realised that the food is so spicy that it kills any bad stuff on it.

Small restaurants, but fast and gentle service

As mahy asian restaurants, it's quite usual to sit down on the floor. Not everywhere is like this, we can find restaurants where we can only sit on chairs, other ones where we can sit on the floor (taking off our shoes at the entrance), and others where it's a bit mixed.

Sopar (de guays)
Sempre hi ha més plats que persones!
There's always more dishes than people!

We always pay when at the exit. Koreans don't like to mix food with money, that's why they never come to the table with the receipt. It's when it's time to leabe that we pay at the cashier. And in Korea there's no need to give tips.

9 - Bon servei.

Good service. Korean restaurants (usually, in many places and services) are well known for their great customer attention. Dishes are served so quickly. I don't remember waiting more than five minutes for any dish.

Television. The most homie Korean restaurants use to have always the TV turned on. At evenings everybody watches the most popular dramas. Even the cookers sit down to watch their favourite drama while they peel some vegetables. If we go out to have dinner, we don't have to worry about missing the chapter of our drama, anywhere we go, they'll have the TV on.
